In the United States, over 30M people have hearing loss, yet only 25% of these people seek help by using a hearing aid. Furthermore, it takes on average 7 years from diagnosis for a patient to commit to a hearing device. The consequence is these people are struggling in many aspects of their daily lives – communicating with friends and loved ones, enjoying shows, tv or other forms of entertainment, and effectiveness at work may be compromised due to the difficulty hearing. This can lead to many negative effects, ranging from anxiety and frustration to depression and potentially increased risk of dementia.
The Phonak Lyric iPad application is designed to assist Lyric Certified Providers have structured, more productive conversations with their patients. The app features a consumer-centric approach, focused on keeping the consumer needs at the forefront of the conversation. First, the application introduces hearing loss as a serious medical condition and illustrates to the consumer how hearing loss can pervade and negatively affect many aspects of life. Second, the app allows the provider to chart the consumer’s hearing test results on the iPad and gives the provider additional tools to translate the hearing test results to the consumer. Finally, the app aggregates the information discussed between the provider and the consumer to recommend a hearing solution that will meet the consumer’s hearing needs.
